World Blood Donor Day 2026 — Queer Blood Saves Lives | Lovo Nova
Queer blood
saves lives.
🩸 June 14 – World Blood Donor Day 2026. A reminder that every donation is an act of solidarity — and queer blood is part of that humanity too 🌟
The progress
Science is winning. Slowly — but it’s winning.
📊 In the UK, 2022 reforms replaced blanket bans with individual risk assessments — and NHS Blood and Transplant reports more gay and bisexual men donating since the change.
📊 In Ireland, the IBTS now also assesses donors person-by-person under the IDRA framework, including clearer pathways for transgender and non-binary donors.
The numbers
The data doesn’t lie. 📈
Unsurprisingly, health authorities (including the UK’s NHS) confirm that integrating gay and bisexual donors has caused no increase in risk to blood supply safety 🤷♀️
That’s now the share of male blood donors in the UK identifying as LGBTQAI+, according to AABB FAIR group data. Before individualized risk assessment was introduced, this figure was just 1.8%
The reality
Progress. But not equality yet. ⛔
That’s progress. But it’s not equality yet ⛔ Stigma is the only thing standing in the way of full equality.
⚠️ The blood supply is under pressure — right now.
This year, with the global blood supply already under pressure — the US saw a 35% drop in donations in early 2026, and platelet shortages are a real concern — every eligible donor matters more than ever 🩸
