This year\u2019s IDAHOBIT theme is:
\u201cAt the heart of democracy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nBecause democracy is not only about elections, institutions, or freedom of speech.
It is also about who gets to live safely, openly, and equally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When LGBTQIA+ people are forced to hide, denied healthcare, excluded from families, or discriminated against at work, democracy itself becomes unequal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, across Europe:
\ud83d\udd34 34% of LGBTI people report experiencing discrimination within the past year
\u26a0\ufe0f 70% of trans people have faced discrimination
\ud83d\udcbc 24% experienced discrimination at work
\ud83c\udfe5 Up to 35% of trans people faced discrimination in healthcare settings<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These are not isolated experiences.
They reflect systems that still fail to protect everyone equally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Progress exists \u2014 but it remains fragile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
In 1990, the World Health Organization officially removed homosexuality from its list of diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That decision changed history.
But it did not immediately end discrimination, violence, or harmful practices targeting LGBTQIA+ people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For decades, so-called \u201cconversion therapies\u201d claimed to change sexual orientation or gender identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reality?
\u274c They did not work
\u274c They caused trauma
\u274c They destroyed lives<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even former leaders of conversion therapy movements later admitted that almost nobody \u201cchanged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, banning conversion therapy has become a major human rights milestone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Countries including:
\ud83c\uddeb\ud83c\uddf7 France
\ud83c\udde9\ud83c\uddea Germany
\ud83c\uddea\ud83c\uddf8 Spain
\ud83c\uddf2\ud83c\uddf9 Malta
\ud83c\uddf5\ud83c\uddf9 Portugal
\ud83c\uddf3\ud83c\uddf1 Netherlands
\ud83c\udde7\ud83c\uddea Belgium
\ud83c\uddec\ud83c\uddf7 Greece<\/p>\n\n\n\n
have officially outlawed these practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That progress matters.
But the fight for bodily autonomy and dignity is not over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trans rights are still under attack in parts of Europe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Forced sterilization has historically been imposed on trans people in many countries as a condition for legal gender recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several countries have abolished these practices, including:

\ud83c\uddf8\ud83c\uddea Sweden
\ud83c\udde9\ud83c\uddf0 Denmark
\ud83c\uddeb\ud83c\uddee Finland

But today, forced sterilization requirements still exist in parts of Europe, including:

\ud83c\udde8\ud83c\uddfe Cyprus
\ud83c\udde8\ud83c\uddff Czech Republic
\ud83c\uddf7\ud83c\uddf4 Romania
\ud83c\uddf7\ud83c\uddf8 Serbia
\ud83c\uddf8\ud83c\uddf0 Slovakia
\ud83c\uddf9\ud83c\uddf7 Turkey<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u27a1\ufe0f The United Nations considers forced sterilization a form of inhuman treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And yet, these realities often remain invisible in mainstream conversations about democracy and equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
LGBTQIA+ families exist everywhere<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, LGBTQIA+ people continue building families, communities, and futures despite legal and social barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\ud83d\udc68\u200d\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udc67 52% of LGBTQ+ people want children
\ud83c\udf0d 75% would consider moving abroad to create a family if their country prevents them from doing so<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because family is not a privilege reserved for some people.
Love is not a political debate.
Dignity is not negotiable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Democracy must protect everyone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
A democracy cannot claim to be equal while part of its population remains unsafe or excluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Real democracy means:
\u2696\ufe0f Equal rights
\ud83c\udfe5 Accessible and inclusive healthcare
\ud83c\udfeb Safe schools and workplaces
\ud83e\udd1d Social acceptance and protection from discrimination<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Equality is not \u201cextra.\u201d
It is the foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond visibility: what comes next?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Visibility matters.
Pride matters.
Representation matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But visibility without structural change is not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This IDAHOBIT 2026, we must continue pushing for:
\u2022 stronger legal protections
\u2022 bans on conversion practices everywhere
\u2022 accessible healthcare for trans people
\u2022 inclusive education
\u2022 protection for LGBTQIA+ families
